Our return home
Can I take this opportunity as the newly appointed Principal to Bowen State School to share how happy my family and I are to receive this amazing opportunity to be part of this great school and community.
I previously taught at Proserpine State School for 7 years and then moved into a Teaching Principal role at Collinsville SS. For the last two years I was the substantive principal at Barkly Highway State School in Mount Isa. My family and I have longed to put our roots down and settle permanently back on the coast and patiently waited for the right opportunity, with family in Mackay and Proserpine we feel we are well positioned and know that Bowen is such a special place to make our permanent home for the future. We are looking forward to becoming involved in the community and all it has to offer. Two of our children are attending the school and one in the local high school. I am looking forward to when my daughter Harriet (2 yr. old) will be attending her first day of prep here in the near future.
So far I have been very impressed with the positive culture in the school and friendly students and staff. Bowen State School is a great school and I am looking forward to working with the school community and P&C to continue to drive the best outcomes and opportunities for all of our students. I am looking forward to catching up on the footpath for a chat around the school. Thank you to all for a warm welcome and friendly the faces. Our family certainly have appreciated this immensely.
Parent Teacher evenings
Can I take this opportunity to share the success of the two last evenings and new approach to the parent teacher evenings being held in the school hall. Thank you to the parents who made the time to attend. To hear the strengths of your child’s learning and areas to improve is a powerful opportunity and great way to support and improve learning outcomes. We welcome feedback from families who attended this week on how we can improve the evening and make this event an even more successful whole school approach. Next year we will be accessing the SOBS School online booking system to support a smoother booking system. I certainly enjoyed talking to families and meeting parents. A great initiative and positive way to communicate the great learning happening in our school.
Looking forward to sharing more great things happening in our school next fortnight.

Next Adventure
I would like to say how pleased I am to be able to spend some time in your great school and to be part of this wonderful community of Bowen.
My 3 children and 6 grandchildren are all in Brisbane and I try to get to see them as often as I can. My eldest grandchild just turned 5 and the youngest is 5 months old. I have a 20 month old labradoodle, Molly, and we travel around in my caravan.
I retired at the end of 2017 after having been a deputy principal in Bundaberg for many years. Due to a change in personal circumstances I decided to come out of retirement and offered my services to Education Queensland as a travelling relief Deputy/Principal. So this is my 11th school this year. We have been at Gumlu, Collinsville, Giru, Jarvisfield, Millaroo, Greenvale, Pentland, Osborne, Boulia and now here.
I have felt very welcomed by the staff, students and those parents I have met. I will usually be at one of the exit gates after school so if you would like to have a chat come and see me or come to the office.

3B
3B have had an extremely busy start to Term 3! We have been reading 'Kumiko and the Dragon' as our focus text for our English unit. We found out that Kumiko has the sacred magic inside of her that keeps all dragons alive... How cool would that be!
Maths has been so much fun to begin this term. We have been working on multiplication and division and, just this week, we made up a 'memory' game that involves all of the representations we have been practicing over the past four weeks. The picture below shows the students playing the game with each other.
4B
This term we have been working hard on a reading comprehension task in English. We read two different recount texts about the First Fleet’s arrival to Australia in 1778- a historical recount and a literary recount. We had to identify a variety of language features and explain how the authors use these features to enrich their texts. We also compared the two texts and identified which text was more entertaining.

Science Week 2019-Week 5
Destination Moon: more missions, more science is the school theme for National Science Week in 2019. This theme is a way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon as well as current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. We will be celebrating science week at BSS with a range of exciting science and technology activities to challenge their thinking. Each class will have a session next week in the library completing these activities.
