Congratulations to student leaders
Today we celebrated the induction of the next generation of school leaders to Bowen State School for 2022. I acknowledge the students undertaking the various leadership roles and enjoyed meeting the families of these fine students today. Can I say thank you to Mrs Weekes for her organisation of this event and I commend the entire school for their outstanding behaviour throughout the ceremony this morning. We are looking forward to the leadership the students will provide this year and working alongside these students each and every day.
Feedback from the recent ARD visit
Last fortnight we hosted the first ARD visit for the term. I have included some snippets of the feedback received from Helen.
“Teams are working collaboratively with their leaders to make a difference for all students and are focussed on Marker Students identified through data.”
“Year 5/6 – Learning Wall and descriptive feedback. Talking through the unit of work and the pre-task through to the explicit teaching and student identification of where there writing currently is, was outstanding. The learning wall as a massive GTMJ is clever and the student work samples and use of descriptive feedback to students is a bright spot. Teacher clarity and knowledge of students individually, next steps at individual and whole of class and the hardest part of the A as a teachable was excellent. Well done”
“Year 2 teacher was able to discuss openly that she is still finding ways to support the learning through the use of the learning wall and her use of descriptive feedback is making a difference for her students, and for herself and what is the next step in teaching and learning needed for not only marker students, but all learners in her classroom.”
Cooler change in weather
What a relief the recent rain and cooler change has provided to our school and community. The last few weeks have been a real struggle and I would like to thank staff for their adjustments to activities and ensuring that students remained hydrated during this time. A reminder to families to ensure students have a labelled water bottle and hat for protection from the sun. Let’s all look forward to the cooler change as we progress towards Autumn.
Looking forward to sharing more great stories around the teaching and learning this term. Until next fortnight have a great couple of weeks.
There has been great excitement during my visits to classrooms with students in Prep, Year 2, 5 and 6 having 100% attendance. It is wonderful that students, staff and families are staying well.
We have had a fantastic fortnight with a visit from our very own Adopt a Cop Senior Constable Renee. She read to the Year 3 students a chapter of Charlotte’s Web, and in the Year 2 classrooms she heard from students about how they are comparing stories. The Year 5 students are eager to have her back for a game of soccer.
Kindawry, our PBL mascot, was very popular when she made a surprise visit to Bowen Childcare and Early Education Centre as part of their Book Fair ocean theme. Kindawry danced with the preschool children and did a song with the toddlers.
The students in 3J hosted a special guest from France, Miss Amber. They are comparing Australia and France as part of a Harmony Day activity. It is wonderful to have great partnerships with the community.
The Challenge Games- 27th & 28th July
The Games For 2022 27th & 28th July
The purpose of The Challenge Games is to provide two days of fun, friendship and participation in a range of sport and fun activities for school students who have a disability. These activities include running, jumping, throwing and team events plus many other fun/novelty activities. Students may participate in as many or few events as they wish, according to their own level of interest and ability. Whilst the aspect of fun and participation will remain the focus of the Games, it will also allow for the identification of students from all schools, state or private, who may be interested in competing at further school, regional or state level in formal Track and Field events. (Please refer to Track & Field Invitational Events on the web).
After a very difficult year last year due to COVID, the committee of The Challenge Games have decided that The Challenge Games will be returning this year 2022. The Date is the 27 and 28 July 2022 in Townsville at the Sports Reserve.
We will be holding some fundraising events that require parent support to help reduce the cost to our families. Please keep an eye out for these events and contact us if you would like to volunteer.

NAPLAN 2022-Year 3 and Year 5
Schools are transitioning from paper-based to computer-based assessments. Year 3 and Year 5 students at our school will complete NAPLAN tests online in 2022. Our Year 3 students will continue to complete the writing assessment on paper. Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are more engaging for students. One of the main benefits is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test presents questions which may be more or less difficult depending on a student’s responses. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. The NAPLAN online testing starts on Tuesday 10 May (Term 2-Week 4)
To find out more about NAPLAN, visit https://nap.edu.au/
If you have any concerns about your child participating in the NAPLAN testing, please contact the class teacher.
Year 3 Science
Our Year 3 students were thinking and working like scientists when we had a special visitor this week. Brett Murphy from Townsville, visited our school bringing along his collection of living things. The program allows students to learn about grouping living things based on observable features. They were introduced to Murtle the Turtle, Chloe the Clownfish and Salty the Seahorse.
Year 5 TIMSS
Two of our Year 5 classes participated in an online trial, which involved answering a selection of Math and Science questions. 62 countries around the world were part of this trial.
Awesome effort Year 5 students!
