ANZAC Commemoration
Congratulations to the entire school community for a respectful and thoughtful participation at our whole school events. Last Friday Bowen State School families and staff enjoyed our school ANZAC remembrance service. Seeing the children’s medal creations from each class were inspiring. We enjoyed listening to our guest speaker Michael and a huge thank you to Mrs Gordon, Mr Dunn and Mrs Weekes for their organisation. We were proud of the children who spoke including many younger students from our school.
On Monday, I attended the dawn and morning services. It was again a moment of pride for our school to march in front of our community. I would like to thank the students and families for your attendance and outstanding behaviour on the day. Lest We Forget!

School Security
This term the school secured over $30 000 to invest in the installation of 7 high quality surveillance cameras within our internal building areas. This process has been in close consultation with the school P&C, neighbouring premises, Department of Education and Protective services. Our cameras are now up and running and will be a powerful deterrent in senseless vandalism at our school. Shortly we will be attaching signage around the school fences to promote this fact. Thank you to Erica our BM for her consultation and close working with the install company.
School Review
Save the Date!!!! Tuesday 10th May Wednesday 11th May and Thursday 12th May. This term we will be undertaking a three-day review for our school. This opportunity will be a wonderful opportunity for families and staff to share the great things about Bowen State and celebrate what we hold close to our heart. We know that there will be recommendations to guide our school for the next four years and into the future. Tuesday and Wednesday will be busy talking to families so please make the three reviews welcome when you see them around our school. We have included a parent information fact sheet as part of this newsletter which unpacks what a school review is all about.
Looking forward to sharing more great stories around the teaching and learning this term. Until next fortnight have a great couple of weeks.

Principal
We have started Term 2 with 86% of students returning from holidays plus we have welcomed some new families to our Bowen State School community. 5H and 5/6P had the highest attendance with 93%. With the first few weeks being four days it is extremely important for your child to come to school as each day the learning builds on what has been learnt the day before.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday 3rd May from 3pm to 5:50pm in the Poole Street Hall. Every parent is encouraged to attend this important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and how to work together to support them in Term 2.
We use an online booking system so you can choose the most convenient timeslot.

STUDENT LEADERS PARADE
On Friday 6th May we will be having a special parade to present our Cultural, Environmental and Class Captains for 2022. Parents are welcome to attend.

This year Bowen State School will be undertaking a full school review. This opportunity to look for the next steps at Bowen State School will involve the whole school community. The external reviews will be talking to staff, students, parents and community members. The dates for the review will be 10th,11th and 12th of May. I will be including information about the process and resources leading up to the event via the newsletter. We are working hard with staff this term reflecting on the key strategic work and high yield practices that are working to improve the learning outcomes this term. Please see below an information flyer for families.
In Week 4 of this term, Year 3 and Year 5 children will participate in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy) assessments. Students will take part in online assessments; Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. Year 5 students will also complete a writing task online. Year 3 will complete their writing task on paper.
The test window for NAPLAN is now 9 days, so we will commence testing on Tuesday 10 May and complete the testing (including any catch up testing) by Friday 20 May 2021. It is important that no holidays or appointments causing children to be absent from school, are scheduled during this testing window.
Moving NAPLAN online brings many advantages including a test design that offers test items tailored to students’ knowledge and ability.
Last week, our Year 3 & 5 students participated in the NAPLAN Online omnibus test. This was a practice test for student to become familiar with logging onto the NAPLAN environment and using the various features of the interface. There are public demonstrations sites available for parents and carers to access at home. https://nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site.
Students do not require permission to participate in the testing, however if you have any questions or concerns please contact the school on 0747869555
