Year 4A/M

Year 4 A/M have been researching how to reduce our waste footprint during our HASS lessons. To support this learning all the Year 4 students visited three venues to help us learn about change and community initiatives in Bowen community; Whitsunday Regional Council, Pilchers Containers for Change and Bowen Police Station.

Mayor Aitken (assisted by Mrs Douglas from WRC), chaired a mock meeting in the WRC boardroom where Councillor Barwick moved a motion that Council should introduce a Green Waste system to ensure all food and garden waste is turned into compost. After discussion and objection from Councillor Fellows about cost implications the elected Councillors voted in favour of the motion.

Students visited Mr Salway at Containers for Cash where they learnt that 4 billion aluminium cans have been collected by Containers for Cash in Queensland over the past three years and how much this has helped reduce landfill.  Students loved the treasure hunt counting if there were enough containers for the next truck load and working out how much money was exchanged at 10c per container.

Senior Constable Jones, coordinated a tour of the Bowen Police Station discussing security, officer safety, variations between State laws, how to become an officer and last but not lease the favourite, the capability of a speed gun timing how fast each student could run.

The teachers and students would like to acknowledge and thank the generous donations of the organisations in providing staff time to conduct class visits. Learning about our community is a high priority at Bowen State School and in 4A/M.
