Dear Parents/carers,
Every Term of the school year is busy and rewarding, they are filled with great events, wonderful achievements and excellent student work. Term 2 at Bowen State School was all of this and more.
We have had a number of well attended events including Athletics Carnival, Maths Fiesta, Healthy Eats Program, School Fete, School Photos, NAPLAN and the Colour Splash and Dash. We continued the great work on our Positive Behaviour for learning systems, ensuring we are teaching our lessons weekly and collectively staying focused on safe and supported classroom environments.
We celebrated excellent results, showing improvements in many areas across the school, both academically and socially. Our attendance on many occasions has surpassed our goals and we continue to work hard every day to ensure our students are making every day count.
As we head off today for a relaxing break, for our staff to spend time with their loved ones and for our students to spend time, recharging their batteries and engaging in family fun activities, I urge everyone to stay safe. For our students to always have a parent/carer or responsible adult knowing of their where about and for our parents and carers to always know where your children are and play. Please travel safe if going away in the break and if staying close to home, enjoy the quiet.
Personally I would like to thank everyone for all the work they have contributed this term to our students, to our staff in the classrooms, our parents and carers at home and to our teacher aides, office staff and the leadership team. We will always continue to focus on providing the best learning opportunities as we strive to improve student learning outcomes.
Enjoy your well-deserved break.
Farewell
As this is my final newsletter article, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Bowen State School community for their generosity and support.
I am proud to say that during my time at Bowen State School we have been able to;
- Increase the whole school attendance to ensure students are accessing their education
- Decrease behaviour incidents and reduce suspensions
- Improve PBL Systems and Processes
- Introduce whole school sports carnivals
- Improve learning outcomes for students – 2018 NAPLAN results
- Increase the quality of oral language outcomes for Prep students (Communities of Practice Project)
- Introduce Instructional Coaching Cycles with Teaching staff
The students of Bowen State School…wow, where to start…Throughout my time, our students have demonstrated determination, growth, and resilience. I have been so proud to be a part of their educational journey and have no doubt that they will achieve great things in life.
Special mention must also go to the BSS P&C who work tirelessly to support our students and have supported a number of requests since my arrival including; supporting sports carnivals, PBL prizes & badges, attendance awards and camps (just to name a few).
I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work in this great school with a range of staff and students, I hope the great work continues into the future.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Elizabeth Mayo

This week at school we have enjoyed a “Maths Fiesta” in the library. Prep B joined in on the activities and had lots of fun completing the interesting Maths challenges. They wore their ‘sombreros’ and really got into the festive spirit. Thank you to Mrs Smalley for organising this great event for our school.

1/2B
This term for science we made toys. Year Ones needed to make a musical toy while Year Twos made a toy that moves.
The Year Twos had to make a push or pull toy and then change how we moved it (push to pull, harder/softer push or pull, change the surface we pushed/pulled it on). We made cars from recycled materials.

3B
4B
In Design Technology, we have been making pinball machines out of cardboard and many other materials. We got to decorate and paint them. They also had to have a theme. We had to have safety instructions because we used a hot glue gun and sharp scissors.
It was lots of fun making them and we also helped each other which were very kind.
In our assessment we had to draw a design of our diagram of our pinball machines. It was really hard. It took 3 days to finish. We had a little play before we took it home. Then the teacher has to mark it on our report card. It had to look good and you had to been able to play it and it had to fit on your desk all of the class. 4B did a very good job.

Lisa, Cailyn and Erica our visiting US teachers
We have had lots of exciting learning opportunities this week.
We were very fortunate to have 3 visiting teachers from the United States with us for 6 days. During their stay they visited different classrooms and explored many of our beautiful tourist spots. These teachers were part of a Bookbag Tour and enjoyed learning about life and education in Bowen. They certainly enjoyed our mild winter weather.
Life Education-Healthy Eats
Year 4-6 students had a visit from Life Education educator, Matt who spent time in each classroom discussing the benefit of healthy eating. The program “Healthy Eats” is all about encouraging kids to eat and enjoy the world of fruit and veg. The Australian Government Food Guidelines recommends children eat two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables every day.
Why? Because only seven percent of North Queensland kids are eating enough fruit and veg. This puts them at risk of obesity, infections, and poor growth and development. Next term we will be continuing with our healthy eating focus.
Did you know your family’s favourite healthy meal could win you $1,000 of Woolworths gift vouchers!
Share your meal or healthy snack recipe with us for your chance to win!
The top five breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack ideas will be published in our Healthy Eats family recipe booklet. See information brochure that was sent home yesterday for more details.

Safety Circus
All Year 3 students from our region were invited to attend a performance aimed at addressing safety concerns that face our children today. Students from Merinda and St Marys joined our BSS Year 3s for this engaging show.Athletics
Last Monday, Bowen State School had seven students take part in the North Queensland Athletics Trials in Townsville. All students did a great job not only representing our school, but the Whitsunday Region.
Congratulations to Edie Jackson, Rebecca Daniel, Megan Anau, Denan Lavaring, Emma Samuels, DeVante Watego and Rashawn Watego for your great efforts!
HUGE CONGRATUALTIONS TO MEGAN ANAU!
Megan was successful in securing her spot in the North Queensland Team placing second in high jump. She will represent North Queensland at the State trials to be held in Brisbane in August. Good Luck Megan!
