Classes
Currently we are making final adjustments to the class arrangements for 2020. I would like to thank the teaching staff for their careful considerations and knowledge in this process. Staff have arranged the classes to ensure that friendships are retained and an equal spread of academic, male female ratio was considered. Can I remind everyone that all class arrangements are temporary until after the 8th day of the school year in 2020. I am pleased to share that we will be running with 19 classes next year and there will be only one composite class. We have approximately 60 prep students going into three straight prep classes. This confidence from the community is a great indicator of our reputation to deliver a quality introduction to formal learning. A reminder that on the last day of the Student Free Days in 2020 Friday 24 January 8:30am -10:30am we will be providing an opportunity for all families to drop off school supplies to classrooms, talk to teachers, meet the admin team, specialist staff and have a “sizzling sausage”. A great informal morning to make connections and an idea to take the stress out of the first day of school on the following Monday. We will promote this event over the remainder of the term in the newsletter and Facebook page.
Farewell Mr Evans (But… Not Goodbye)
Can I take this opportunity to thank our wonderful, kind and friendly Deputy Principal Mr Wayne for his commitment and service to the school, staff and students over the course of term 3 and term 4 this year. I have truly appreciated his enthusiasm and kind nature with all members of our community. Wayne has decided to “hang up the boots” but in an exciting development, has purchased a house and is retiring to Bowen. I am looking forward to seeing Wayne in our school in 2020 in a relief capacity. I believe his purchase of a boat may impact on this on occasions. Thank you Wayne and good luck on the next chapter travelling and sightseeing around this great country.
Strategic direction
Over this last few weeks the leadership team have been compiling the evidence collected by staff of our data to suggest the direction for the school in 2020. We have come to the conclusion that there will be three areas we will focus on:
1. Quality teaching and learning Literacy: Reading and Writing
2. Quality teaching and learning STEM Science Technology Engineering Maths: Application of Knowledge and skills
3. Strong relationships
These key areas will drive the key work through the support of our school leaders to ensure all our staff have the “capacity building” and “professional learning” to improve our data and outcomes for students.
Looking forward to sharing more great news stories for the fortnight. Until then have a great couple of weeks.

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in 2019 ICAS testing. We are very proud of all of your awesome results. Here is the final group of students who participated in spelling, maths and writing. Reminders will go out in the New Year about ICAS 2020.
Class Transition Day
We are very excited to let everyone know that students will be moving up to their new 2020 classroom next Wednesday at 2:00-2:50pm. This will provide the opportunity for students to get to know their new classmates and teacher ready for next year. We have even invited our new preps to attend during this session. We trialled this process last year and found it to be very successful. A huge big thank you to all our staff who have spent many hours working on our 2020 class groupings.
Just a reminder to keep a lookout for the 2020 booklist which will be sent home on Wednesday Week 10. Report Cards will be emailed to all families at the end of Week 10.
2c
2C have been adding a new event to a super hero themed book called, 'In a Flash'. They have been awesome editors and self-marked their own work using success criteria. In Art, we are experimenting with materials to create an image to match our new event.
3c
In English, we have been busy adapting the poem Dessert Community and created our own beach themed poems. Like true poets, we all presented our poems in class. In Design Technologies we designed our own sensational lunch! We also learned a lot about different (current and historical) techniques that can be used to produce, preserve and prepare food. We even got to design, make and eat our own pizzas!
4/5c
Throughout this term we have been learning drama. We are currently rehearsing a play based on “The Story of Baucis and Philemon”. This play is about an old couple that appeared in a lesser known Greek mythology. Students are enjoying the stories about Greek gods and goddesses and how they gave meaning to the world people saw around them.
5/6c
This term, 5/6C have been reading the novel Holes. We then watched the film and wrote a comparison. The majority of 5/6C enjoyed the book more than the movie, as they were able to use their own imaginations to visualize what the characters and setting looked like.
Swimming Carnival
Bowen State School students made a splash at the swimming carnival last week. Congratulations to all students who participated in the event. A huge thank you to the P&C, parents and teachers who came out to support the event.

Farewell to Rainer Power our Community Education Counsellor
It is with a heavy heart that we bid Rainer farewell on his new journey outside of life at Bowen State School this coming Monday. Rainer has been a pivotal part of our school community specifically the Student Support Team (SST). Over the past few years Rainer in his role has supported children, staff, families and the wider community to achieve more successful outcomes for our students. His strength has been building strong positive relationships, leading by example, having high expectations for behaviour and learning. We thank Rainer for all his contributions and specifically for his leadership in increasing awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives. We wish you all the best Rainer and look forward to seeing you and your family around Bowen.
Danielle Upkett.
Four of our students, Lucas Gorham, Charlotte Hemmings, Kamerson Stoneham and Flynn Sawdy attended Paluma Writes Camp earlier this year with Mrs LeBherz. At camp the students got to work with speical guests Kirsty Murray, Author and Colwyn Campbell, Illustrator, as well as the Paluma teaching team. This week the students were visited by Ash and Alison of the Paluma Writers Camp and were presented with their books which contains works from all the students that attended the camp.
Sports News - White Ribbon Mixed Touch Tournament
Last Friday, 24 students went to the White Ribbon Touch Tournament in Townsville. There were two teams, a year 5 and 6 team and a year 4 and 5 team. Each team had to play 5 games. We would like to thank Mr Mitchell, Chappy Adam and Rainer Powe for coaching us and organising the trip.
