Regional recognition of our key work
This term I was asked to share the great work around our strategic focus on writing and the targeted intervention of our marker students. Our North Queensland Regional office is creating a virtual platform for principals and middle leaders to access and implement high yield practices into their own schools. Our key work shared is a culmination of coaching from our middle leaders, staff working collaboratively and evidence of student output being monitored frequently.
We have also engaged with parents as part of this work and are seeing pleasing results from our students. I had the privilege to unpack this story to 150 principals at the recent regional webinar and have been asked to present our story at the Principal Learning Fair in Townsville. The affirmation from other schools and leaders keen to inquire about our work is confirmation that we are on the right track here at Bowen State. I am proud of our teachers who are leading and driving this key work in the classrooms and the ongoing coaching and support from our middle leaders. Our students are the real winners and I am so proud to see their growth in confidence and achievements to date. I have included the resource and write up of our school in this week’s newsletter.
Farewell to Mrs Smalley
Therese Smalley was farewelled last week as she commenced her new role of HOSES at QB State School for the remainder of this year and all of 2022. As a staff we thanked Therese for the 17 years of commitment to Bowen State and acknowledged the achievements in her time here at a farewell morning tea. Thank you to Fiona Radcliff who has stepped out of the DRT role and into the LET role to back fill Therese for the remainder of the year.
School Fete
We are asking families to save the day and promote the Bowen State School fete this term on Saturday 14th August. There will be a range and variety of events and activities throughout the day. We are asking families to watch the school Facebook page closely for updates as information comes out towards this great community event.
Looking forward to sharing more great stories around the teaching and learning this term. Until next fortnight have a great couple of weeks.

Year 1W/P are learning about Australian coins. These students have arranged the coins in order from the most value to the least value.

Over the next two weeks, B Block will be holding their own Block Olympics. Each class has selected a country to represent, with 6R choosing New Zealand. We have been learning about the Ancient and Modern day Olympics and are very excited to compete against our schoolmates for medals.
Go Team New Zealand5B
This term we are learning about poetry. Students are enjoying analysing various poems and looking for imagery and sound devices. For our assessments we will be analysing the poem ‘Uluru’. To link into our English unit we drew our own pictures of Uluru to brighten up the room.

Sports Report
Welcome back for term 3. As always there has been plenty of sporting action happening around Bowen State School both during school time and outside of school time!
State Championship Cross Country
Last weekend were the Queensland State cross country championships in Ipswich. One of our students in Grade 4 represented North Queensland in this event, Charlee S. She did an amazing job making it to this level and ran a PB on the day. Congratulations Charlee you should be incredibly proud of yourself.
School Holiday Program Basketball
During the school holidays it was great to see some of our students head down to Mackay to be part of the school holiday program. Students were able to improve their skills as they worked on different aspects of their game and played several games during the 2 day event. The feedback from the coaches and staff from Mackay basketball was incredibly positive about our students, both in the way they conducted themselves and their skills. Great work kids!! We are hoping to have a similar program up and running here at Bowen State School into the future.
After School Basketball
After School Basketball continues to grow in popularity with more students joining each week. It has been great to see the skills of all the players develop and the level of basketball is becoming very good. Whitsunday basketball and Mackay basketball want to see what we have established here at Bowen State School and will visit to see our programs running in the not too distant future. This will be an amazing opportunity to showpiece what we have achieved in such a short period of time. A big thank you has to go to all the amazing staff who have helped make this possible!
Excellence and Elite Basketball
Excellence basketball has been modified and will continue to evolve this term. With the development of skills and passion for the game it has become necessary to change things a little bit. We now have 3 sessions of Excellence and Elite basketball per week, with the addition of 7.30am sessions on Tuesday mornings. It was great to have nearly 20 students attend the first of these sessions this week.
Juggling
Congratulations to our juggling team who had their first performance at school at parade on the last day of Term 2. They all did and amazing job and the reaction from everyone that saw it was sensational. The team is continuing to work hard and will have another performance at school Fete and then a very special day dedicated to the juggling team on the 27th August. More information will be coming in regard to this day soon.
Cricket Trials
Cricket Trials are happening this term and last night we had the Bowen Sub District trials. Congratulations to Kaleb F, Riley B, Henry W and Casey F who were selected to represent Bowen in the Whitsunday trials.
Athletics Trials
Next Friday we have our Bowen athletics trials at the sporting complex. We have a large number of students representing Bowen State School at this event. All the best to all of these students and we’ll have an update on their progress in the next sports report.

School Opinion Survey 2021
Welcome back to all our families in our school to a very busy Term 3. We have the excitement of heading off to Challenge Games in week 3 of this term, many of our students are so excited for this trip.
Our ECDP is growing in numbers of children being about to access both face to face support as well as outreach in to their local daycare or kindy. We have over the holidays relocated from our library to a flexible learning space located near the OSHC building. We are currently working on building a sensory room and will update newsletters with photos as we go.
In our community there are some NDIS workshops for parents and carers in the next few weeks so please keep an eye out for dates as these are very valuable support for Bowen.
