Inclusion Scan and assess feedback
I would like to congratulate the entire school community for the positive voice received on how we support all our students in the inclusion space. The opportunity to head from students, staff and parents was a gift to provide the school a sharper focus for the key work in our 2023 strategic plan. I have included a copy of the actions we are targeting this year and the celebrations from the team. Well done Bowen State School.
25 brand new computers have been installed in the Computer Lab in our Library just in time ready for NAPLAN commencing Wednesday 15th March in week 8.
NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards and over time. Students sit assessments in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
During this testing period students will complete a number of different tests over the 10 day testing period. Attendance is imperative during this time so please do your best to make sure all Year 3 and Year 5 students come to school every day.
The P & C will be providing breakfast to all students in year 3 and 5 over the Naplan period and a small celebration will also occur for these students once all of the test have been finished.
In other news our Reading HUB is back in action before school every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 8:15am – 8:40. Any students in year 1 or year 2 are welcome and encouraged to come along.
The books that the students are reading now align with the new phonics program that has been implemented throughout our school from P-4 this year. More information around our exciting new Phonics Program will be in the next newsletter.
This week we held our PBL Pop-Up Rewards sessions. Look at all the fun we had! Prep/Year 1 students had a blast playing in the older students playground and Year 2/3/4 loved "going back to Prep" for some fun with bubbles. Our senior students loved the opportunity to bring in their own devices for some down time to celebrate their great behaviour choices at school. Students will now be looking forward to our next rewards session, which will be our End of Term Rewards.
Our new focus for the next two weeks will be "Being Responsible", specifically following adult instructions immediately... first time, every time! A great little jingle we will be using to prompt students to make the right choice is "Say YES or OK and do it straight away". This is a great little phrase that you can even use at home to ensure consistency in behaviour expectations.
We also have our PBL Badge Parade coming up in Week 8 of this term. Students who are nominated for a badge will receive a letter next week inviting their parent/guardian to attend and informing them of which badge their child is being awarded. We hope to see many of you in attendance!

This unit for Math, we are looking more closely at numbers. We are looking at the parts that make up numbers. We are partitioning the number 15 and looking at what 3 parts can make up 15. We will then narrow down this information and find the parts that can help us work out magic squares.
5/6H have hit the ground running this year! We've been working hard writing short stories in English and collecting data to create graphs in maths. We have had a large number of students trialling for many different sporting teams, with three girls attending touch footy on Friday last week. Four of our superstar writers attended a writing workshop at QBSS with author, Dave Lowe, where they were lucky enough to write their very own choose-your-own-ending style books. Enjoy reading some of the stories the kids have written, and discovering information about the pets and eye colours in 5/6H.
