Uniform policy
Bowen State School is currently reviewing our whole school uniform policy. This document does not currently exist and as a school we want to align our values to reflect our pride in our current uniform. As a school and P&C we have consulted with various members of our internal school community and are looking to extend this to include our families here at Bowen State.
Next week on Monday the 14 June at 3:30pm the P&C and school principal will have draft copies on display for community feedback. The Uniform policy will be formally tabled for discussion and included in the minutes as part of the meeting. We welcome families to come to this meeting and have your opportunity to provide feedback.
I have included extracts of the facts we have considered from the Department of Education Procedures around dress code including the expectations from the Principal, P&C and Parents throughout this process. The view this complete document please follow the link provided.
https://ppr.qed.qld.gov.au/pp/student-dress-code-procedure
In accordance with section 360 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld), a principal may develop a student dress code that will apply when students are attending, or representing, the school. When developing a dress code, the principal must ensure it is compliant with guidelines, as described in this procedure.
Dress codes must:
- be developed in consultation with the school community
- be consistent with health and safety considerations
- comply with anti-discrimination legislation
- consider affordability, functionality and durability of uniform items
- provide uniform options, including shorts and pants, in all uniform categories for all students, regardless of gender.
Dress codes clearly explain and document standards of acceptable dress in relation to clothing worn by students, including headwear, footwear, and other aspects of personal presentation.
Dress codes must incorporate strategies to accommodate the individual needs and circumstances of students and strategies for managing non-complying students.
Principals
- Consult with stakeholders (students, staff, parents, P&C) and interest groups (e.g. cultural leaders) early in the process of developing and reviewing the dress code to ensure the needs and diversity of the school community are represented – seeking feedback about existing and proposed dress standards and strategies to promote the wearing of the school uniform using multiple channels of communication.
- Consult with suppliers to obtain information about uniform options that are affordable and readily available.
- Document all consultation undertaken.
- Ensure timely communication of any proposed changes to the school uniform (before the changes are implemented), to allow parents, school uniform shops, suppliers, external retailers, and any other parties with significant stocks of uniforms to prepare for the changes.
- Consider displaying uniform options for feedback.
P&C
- Support and engage in consultation led by the principal, giving advice and recommendations regarding the school’s dress code.
- Direct parents to the principal to discuss any individual issues regarding the dress code.
- Support the school to resolve issues regarding the school’s dress code.
Parents
- Commit to supporting the dress code as part of the enrolment agreement.
- Support the student to adhere to the dress code.
- Request short or long term modifications or exemptions to the dress code in writing, providing reasons for request.
- Work with the school to resolve issues regarding student compliance with the school’s dress code.
- Engage in consultation processes about the dress code.
We envision that once the consultation phase has been completed then we will provide copies of the newly endorsed uniform policy in the office, website and Facebook page. We will be rolling out this policy in Semester 2 2021. Thank you for your support to make Bowen State School Great!
Looking forward to sharing more great stories around the teaching and learning this term. Until next fortnight have a great couple of weeks.

Crunch Time of Term
The end of term 2 is fast approaching which means a busy time in all of our primary classrooms. Over the next couple of weeks, students will be completing their final assessment pieces. These assessment pieces will be graded and go towards each students final reporting grade, so attendance is crucial. If your child is sick or you know that you are going to be away, please contact your child’s teacher to discuss what arrangements can be made so that your child can complete their assessment pieces and receive the grade they deserve.
Awesome Attendees
Congratulations to the above classes for having over 93% attendance for term 2.

Curriculum News
Report Cards
Report Cards for Semester 1 will be emailed to all families on Friday 16th July. Over a semester, students complete a variety of assessment tasks demonstrating their knowledge and skills and are allocated an achievement mark based on year level achievement standards. Your child’s report will contain the achievement level for each learning area, a general comment and behaviour comment.
Planning Week
Next week is Planning Week, with year level teachers meeting to organise Term 3 curriculum delivery. One focus is the alignment of the teaching and learning with assessment and reporting. Teachers discuss the assessment tasks and the knowledge and skills that the students will need to be successful with the task. Time will be spent identifying the literacy demands of tasks and differentiation. Differentiation means tailoring teaching to meet our students’ individual needs. Teachers can differentiate the content, process, products, or the learning environment.
PJ
This term, the students in Prep J have been busy working on their writing. Students have been working hard to achieve their personal goals to become better writers.
In Maths we have been counting to and from 20 and making groups of objects and deciding which has more and which has less. We have also been learning about 3D objects and their characteristics. Students in Prep J created 3D objects using playdoh and paddle pop sticks and also created castles using 3D objects.
2 D/G
This term, 2DG have been learning about Media Arts. Students have listened to sounds and analysed the sounds. They have viewed videos and analysed how the images help them understand a story. The students then created their own PowerPoint presentations. They inserted their own animal picture of a wombat or turtle onto a slide then recorded and inserted their own sound to match their chosen animal. They had a lot of fun learning how to add slides, choose a background colour and add text. Next, students will be presenting their PowerPoint to the class.
GO UPDATE
This week many discussions have been had with students not coping. Most of their stress relates to their own internal dialogue (what their inner voice says). Positive self-talk is essential for strong mental wellbeing; for confident resilient kids. When your child understands what THEY think of themselves and their work is the most important factor. They gain the superhero confidence and resilience that creates strong mental wellbeing and happy kids.
