Maximising Learning Days
Last week on parade I spoke to the school community about our commitment to the Department’s Equity and Excellence Policy and the clear messages around Maximising Learning Days for all students. At Bowen State School we incorporate our whole school positive behaviour for learning (PBL) system to ensure positive relationships between students and staff. We ensure all classes are consistent with our values around this system. We work with individual families and students to ensure we are removing the barriers so that all our students can access the curriculum and reach their full potential. I am proud of the wrap around supports we offer here at Bowen State to ensure children are at school getting the opportunities to grow and develop their skills and knowledge each and every day.
End of Term
As we approach the end of a very busy term, I would like to emphasise the importance for families to track and monitor the various school communication platforms for upcoming key events. This includes junior & senior sporting events, Under 8’s Day and NAIDOC day. This is an exciting time to celebrate great cultural and sporting events here at our school. I’m looking forward to celebrating these key events alongside our students and staff.
Have you enrolled for Prep at Bowen State?
Recently we shared our Prep transition dates and flier for the Saturday Prep Open Day. At Bowen State we value transitions for students and the whole family. On the first Saturday after the school holidays (15 July) we will opening up the classrooms for families to view our campus. I am looking forward to giving our incoming families and students a guided tour of what Bowen State can offer for your Prep child in 2024.
Principal
This week we celebrated Chaplaincy Week. We are thankful for the support Chappy Sandy gives our students. Chappy Sandy is often walking around our school with her deck of UNO cards and SPOT IT ready to celebrate students' hard work with a 15mins time out to have general pastoral care conversations while playing a game. Chappy Sandy can give religious support if families request it with written parent consent. Otherwise she uses her gift and expertise in the space of supporting students to be resilient, have a positive mindset and to problem solve.

PCYC Re Engagement Program (PREP): Building leadership skills via connection to the community.
This week our school team and PCYC's Ms Butler connected with Senior Sergeant Craig Shepard, Officer in Charge at the Bowen Police Station. We were lucky enough to have Senior Sergeant Shepard take the team on a full tour of the station while outlining the roles and responsibilities of all involved. We walked away thankful for the commitment to keeping our community safe and realise the police use a range of strategies before ‘locking someone up’.
Students have been working very hard on their Media Arts units. We are now starting to get into the fun part of designing. Preps have been exploring characters and settings in media artworks inspired by stories, and drawing pictures of things they enjoy doing with their families. Year 1 continue to explore the basic functions of a computer and typing. They have been identifying different digital devices in the classrooms and understanding their function and purpose.
Year's 2-4 have been exploring the features of PowerPoint. They have been especially enjoying the background design features and Word Art transformations. The students are navigating the functions quite well, while some students are more confident than others to explore the program. Year 4 are currently working on their humour poems for their animated character. Year 3 are creating an Earth Day poster, to persuade the audience to participate in this event. Year 2 are beginning to create a character for the landscape background, to which they will add a soundscape. The students will present these to the class, once completed.

For Science, our class have been investigating materials and their properties. We conducted an experiment to see which folded piece of paper would hold a large book. We predicted, tested and then recorded our results.
This week, Year 3 have been learning about the Containers for Change program and how our school would benefit from participating in the program. On Monday, 3A and 3D looked at the rubbish that was found in the bins in our eating area and sorted out the poppers that could be recycled instead of going to landfill. On Tuesday, all three classes had a great time visiting Containers for Change. The students had an opportunity to ask a lot of questions about what is recycled in Bowen. Next week, students will be writing a persuasive letter to Mr Payne convincing him that our school needs to participate in Containers for Change by recycling poppers.
Students in 5M have been busy studying about the wonderful world of space, and beginning their own research project about planetary facts and how scientific explorations have helped humanity. A few buddying young scientists have come up with some space facts to share with you!

DID YOU KNOW??? By Reuban, Dagany and Cooper D Did you know that astronauts do their business in space on a small toilet that is worth approximately 19 million dollars? If the toilet breaks down, astronauts have a “space nappy” or undergarment they can use as a backup. |
DID YOU KNOW??? 2I are looking at push and pull toys in Science this term. We are investigating forces and the motion of objects. We discovered that more force made the car travel faster and further. With less force, the car did not travel as far. Later this term we will make our own push/pull toy.
