Dear Parent/carers,
Firstly, I would like to congratulate all our students on another wonderful two weeks at Bowen State School. Our students make me so proud of how they follow our four values and as a school; we need to celebrate the brilliant start we have had to the school year. I am so excited about what we are going to achieve this year!
Leadership Induction
Last week’s parade focused on inducting our Year 6 students into their leadership roles for 2019. Firstly, I need to commend all our students on their focus and attention throughout the parade, especially are Prep students who are so new to special event ceremonies. We were all so proud of our new leaders and we know they will do us proud during 2019. Congratulations!
How we communicate at Bowen State School
Classroom – your child’s class teacher will communicate in many ways (emails, phone calls, messages home, homework books, and apps. Each year we offer two parent teacher interviews, held in Term 1 and Term 3 and two report cards, which are issued to all students at the end of Term 2 and Term 4.
Newsletters – can be accessed through the Bowen State School Facebook Page and our website www.bowenss.eq.edu.au.
SMS Text messaging service for absences – parents/carers will be notified of an unexplained student absence via SMS text message. You can then reply with the reason for the absence via return text or update your child’s absence by contacting the school
Bowen State School Facebook Page – this is the official page for our school and provides regular updates on school learning, events and key messages.
P&C AGM
We welcome back our P&C for the 2019 school year. Their AGM will be held on Monday 11th March at 6pm in the Library. We look forward to the nominations for the new Executive Roles and the continued progress of the great work and input the P&C has experienced in 2018. All welcome.
Next week I will be attending the Principal Conference in Brisbane. This event is held bi-annually and sees principals from across the state come together. In my absence, Mrs Mayo will be leading the school, supported by the members of the Leadership Team.
Have a great Week 5!
Kind regards,
Jemille Malouf
From the Deputy
Attendance
We have had an amazing start to 2019 and are tracking well with our school attendance despite the weather at the beginning of Term 1. Our Attendance Goals for 2019 are:
* Decrease the number of students attending less than 85%
* Increase the number of students attending above 95%
* Increase whole school attendance to 95%
We will be celebrating those students who have achieved 100% attendance for the first 5 weeks of school in our Week 6 Parade with our first round of attendance bands.
Contact Details
The safety and wellbeing of students are the highest priorities for the department. Parents need to know if their child hasn't turned up for school, and schools need to know when and why a child is absent.
State schools are required to notify parents on the same day that any student is absent from school without explanation.
Schools can choose the approach to same day notification that best suits the local community. This may include text or email messages, phone calls or home visits. It is also recognised that for any notification process to be effective, parents will need to ensure the school has current contact details and schools will need to have effective and efficient processes in place to ensure this occurs.

Communication
Communication is vital in ensuring we are all able to work together to support your child in their educational progress. As always, the first point of contact regarding your child is their classroom teacher. If you would like to discuss your child with Miss Malouf, or myself please contact our wonderful office staff who will organise a suitable meeting time.
PA
During this early part of the term, we are establishing routines in Prep and familiarizing children with our school’s code of behavior. Children are also learning phonemic awareness – the ability to hear and identify sounds in words. They are becoming familiar with the SSP (our phonics program) monsters which will assist them in the early stages of blending sounds to make words. Another big focus is on oral language – encouraging children to express themselves as well as comprehend what is being said/read to them. This is done through reading stories, drawing and writing to encourage children to express themselves, participating in discussions and fostering the social interactions that occur during indoor play.
PB
Prep B has had a very exciting start to 2019. We have been discovering and exploring our new world in Prep.
Amelia and Ali playing with the animals and playdough on the tough tray.
Erikiah and Keturiah having some well-earned down time with the puzzle letters.
1/2B

Year 1/2B has been measuring the length of objects. We need to make sure we have no gaps, no overlaps and we start measuring at the end of the object. We will compare the length of objects to see which one is the longest. We will also measure the capacity of containers and the Year 2’s will measure the area of an object.
3B
3B are off to a great start for 2019! The rain tried to dampen our spirits early on but we've soldiered on. In English, we are practicing writing persuasive paragraphs. Our ultimate goal is that we are going to try and persuade Miss Malouf of something that we need more of or less of at Bowen State School. I'm sure some of 3B will be trying to convince Miss Malouf for more play time at lunchtimes! In Science, we are investigating what makes something living or non-living.
4B
In 4B we have been learning how to be mindful. We have been focusing on being present in the moment and learning to calm our minds. We have been doing this by focusing on our breathing and our bodies. This will help us to be more focused in our everyday lives.

5B
This term in Science we are looking at the solar system. The students have been learning about different celestial bodies such as planets, moons and asteroids. We have also studied the Apollo 11 mission and the impact of the space program on our everyday lives. The use of satellite photography was a topic the students really found fascinating!
6B

This term in Science, 6B have been looking at reversible and irreversible changes. Recently, we conducted an experiment on rusting and how different liquids can cause steel wool to rust quicker or slower than others. Students made predictions and wrote down observations.

Emma Daley - 2A
Hello, My name is Emma Daley and I am currently teaching three days a week in 2A. I began teaching at Bowen State School in 2012 after spending a few years teaching in a high school. I have had the last three years off work on maternity leave and extended leave to spend time with my young family but am excited to be back at school teaching.
Sally Hannemann
Hola, Soy senora Hannemann
I am excited to be a part of the team at BSS, teaching Spanish to the 5’s and 6’s. I lived in Chile whilst completing my undergraduate degree majoring in Spanish and International Relations. When I returned to Australia I secured a position with the Spanish Commercial Office in Sydney where I was employed as a trade consultant. Learning Spanish gave me the opportunity to travel extensively , meet new people and gain a great understanding of our world and all the exciting people and cultures within. Now with a Master of Teaching under my belt I am able to share my love of Spanish, an exciting language spoken in over 20 countries around the world. The children will enjoy the benefits of not only learning a language but also being immersed in Spanish culture, music, dance, food and celebrations.
Hasta la vista
Matilta Cooper
Hello Bowen State School students and families,
My name is Miss Matilda Cooper and I will be working at Bowen State School throughout the year as a relief teacher. I am originally from Newcastle in NSW where I graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts from the University of Newcastle in 2016. In Newcastle, I taught Kindergarten (Prep) for 2 years and loved teaching students in their first year of ‘Big School’, learning to read, write, count, sing, play and have fun!
I am passionate about the performing arts; singing, dancing and acting. Last year I co-directed ‘Seussical the Musical Jr’ at my school where the students got to showcase their creative art talents. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, staff and school community better during my time at Bowen State School and I am especially looking forward to teaching 5A for 2 weeks later this term.
Hope to see you around,
Miss Cooper
Classrooms have been very busy with students learning about new routines, transitions and expectations. They have settled into their new classes and are engaging with the Australian Curriculum. Year Level Curriculum Maps were shared at the parent information sessions. These give an outline of the content that will be covered during Term 1. At Bowen State School, we encourage the development of the whole child in academic, sporting and cultural avenues. Throughout the year, we offer numerous opportunities to support and enhance learning experiences for your children including:
• Year level excursions & camps
• Weekly sporting rotation
• ICAS competitions
• On-Line Learning & STEM activities
• Arts Council performances
• Environmental programs.
We also know how important it is for our kids to feel good about themselves, to have friends and be engaged in their learning at school. We have allocated time each week to discuss these important skills during our PBL and Social Emotional Lessons.

Our Instrumental Program has many members this year. It is great to see it so strong. Mr Jason Osman, the Instrumental Teacher, is at Bowen State School every Thursday. If you have any queries or concerns please contact the office or come in and see Mr Osman personally.
All payments for the Instrumental Program are now due. Invoices have been issued. Thanks to the many parents and caregivers who have promptly paid these fees. For those with outstanding fees please ensure payment is organized with our office staff now. Unpaid fees will mean the student will not be able to participate in this program. As soon as paperwork is complete and fees are paid students will have access to their assigned instruments. So many students are excited to have this opportunity to be a part of this program. Thank you to all who value music and encourage their children to be involved in Bowen State School's Instrumental Program.
Working as a team: Bowen State School staff, students, parents/carers and wider community is vital for a positive school community and to increase positive outcomes for students. Below is a table that has recently been shared with our staff. I thought it would be useful to share with you all as our whole school community. As a Bowen State School community we want our kids to have self-confidence, to have a growth mindset and learn through making mistakes. The table below is a reminder that the words we as a school community use can have a big impact on our little people.
Hello Families,
What a great start to 2019 we have had at Bowen State School. I am excited for term 1 as I will be running lots of programs for students. Last week I kicked off after school boys program for year 6 boys and had a great turn out. This term in boys group we are looking at the concept of ‘Sharpening one another’. We discussed what this meant and how it would look. The boys shared their thoughts such as; encouraging each other, building positive relationships, looking out for each other, pushing each other to do better and many more. Last week was the launch of a brand new program called ALIVE. This is a mentoring program where students connect with positive role models in the community through different activities. Rainer Power and I are very excited to be able to run this program and look forward to the impact it will have on young people.
Have a great weekend!
